Provenance

Where it came from

Fireslinger was originally released in the 1998 Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Mark Rosewater. It was later reprinted as part of the 2014 Duel Decks Anthology, a commemorative set that bundled the original Jace vs. Chandra, Elves vs. Goblins, Divine vs. Demonic, and Garruk vs. Liliana decks into a single collection, intended to celebrate the popularity of the duel deck format.

The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the game's early history. His depiction of the Fireslinger captures the aggressive, chaotic nature of red-aligned mana, emphasizing the high-risk, high-reward playstyle of dealing damage to both the opponent and oneself. Within the Jace vs. Chandra deck, the card served as a quintessential piece of red-deck strategy, designed to pressure the opponent's life total rapidly at the cost of the player's own health.
