Where it came from
First Day of Class was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Arcavios, the card represents a common occurrence at the prestigious Strixhaven University, focusing on the whimsical and academic nature of a school for mages. The card mechanics, which provide a buff to creatures entering the battlefield, were designed to reflect the energetic and fast-paced atmosphere of the beginning of an academic term.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering. Minguez leaned into a vibrant, high-fantasy aesthetic that highlights the busy, bustling architecture of the university grounds. Upon its release, the card saw immediate play in various competitive and casual formats, particularly in combo-focused decks that utilize its triggered ability, earning it a reputation as a highly efficient utility piece within the Strixhaven collection.
