Where it came from
First Day of Class is a common sorcery card originally printed in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion Strixhaven: School of Mages. The card was designed to support the 'learn' mechanic, which allows players to interact with external cards from their sideboard, reflecting the thematic setting of a magical university. The illustration by artist Greg Staples captures the busy, whimsical atmosphere of students gathering for their first lessons at the Prismari College, utilizing a vibrant color palette to evoke a sense of academic wonder.
The card was included in 'The List', a curated selection of reprints integrated into Set Boosters that allows players to discover older or thematic cards within modern product releases. Its presence in The List serves to highlight cards that synergize well with specific mechanical themes, such as the +1/+1 counter strategies featured in the Strixhaven set. It has been well-received by limited format players for its utility in triggering various classroom-themed abilities while maintaining a lighthearted narrative tone.
