Provenance

Where it came from

First Responder was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, a collection themed around a 1920s-inspired art deco metropolis ruled by organized crime families. Designed for the Commander format, the card reflects the aesthetic of the Brokers family, an organization that functions as both a law firm and a paramilitary force. The card mechanics and imagery evoke the city's focus on protection and legalistic conflict resolution.

The illustration, created by artist Games Workshop and Wizard of the Coast contributor Alexander Mokhov, depicts a masked figure in high-collared, formal attire typical of the set's noir-inspired art direction. The design emphasizes the 'shield counter' mechanic central to the Brokers, intended to showcase the defensive and resilient nature of the faction. Upon release, it was recognized as a functional tool for decks centered on creature recursion and board stability.
