Fish

Fish originally appeared in the Homelands expansion released by Wizards of the Coast in 1995. The set was designed to be a top-down, flavor-heavy experience centered on the folklore of the plane of Ulgrotha, aiming to evoke a Gothic horror aesthetic through its art and creature types. As a common creature, Fish was intended as a functional, low-cost utility card during a period when the game's mechanics were still rapidly evolving and finding their balance.

The card’s illustration was created by Rhonda Libbey, who contributed several pieces to the set. Her artistic direction for the card leaned into the literal, whimsical nature of the creature, providing a straightforward visual that fit the set's broader exploration of Ulgrotha's ecosystem. While the card is often cited by collectors as a relic of the experimental design era of mid-90s Magic, it was later reprinted in The List, a curated selection of cards from the game's history that can be found in modern-day Set Boosters.
