Provenance

Where it came from

Fists of the Anvil is a common card released in the 2003 Magic: The Gathering set Mirrodin. As the first expansion in the block of the same name, Mirrodin focused on an artificial metallic plane, introducing the 'artifact' theme that defined the set's mechanical identity. This card was designed as a combat trick, allowing red decks to temporarily boost a creature's power and toughness to capitalize on the high-artifact density of the environment.

The illustration was created by artist Puddnhead, who contributed several pieces to the Mirrodin block. The art depicts a stylized, mechanical gauntlet, reflecting the set's aesthetic transition toward a world where biological life and cold metal fused. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard utility tool for limited play formats, serving as a functional piece of red's color-pie identity during a period marked by rapid power-level shifts in competitive Magic.
