Where it came from
Regress was released in 2003 as part of the Mirrodin expansion, the first set in the Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set introduced an artifact-heavy theme, transporting players to a metallic plane forged entirely of metal, which dictated the mechanical and aesthetic direction of the entire release. Designed to provide blue decks with a versatile board-control tool, the card allows a player to return any target permanent to its owner's hand, offering a flexible solution against both creatures and non-creature threats.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic artists in the early history of Magic: The Gathering. Rush employed his signature style to depict a swirling, ethereal energy effect consistent with blue-aligned magic, visually emphasizing the concept of displacement and time-based manipulation. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility spell within the Mirrodin limited and constructed environments, valued by players for its ability to create tempo swings by resetting an opponent's board state.
