Flashfires

Flashfires was originally printed in the Portal Second Age set in 1998, designed as part of an introductory product line intended to make Magic: The Gathering more accessible to new players. The card functions as a red sorcery that destroys all Plains, reflecting the color pie's long-standing tradition of using fire-based spells to disrupt white mana sources. Its inclusion in Ninth Edition, released in 2005, served as a core set staple, keeping the mechanic available to players in a contemporary format at the time.

The artwork for the Ninth Edition printing was illustrated by the artist Dave Dorman. Known for his atmospheric and painterly style, Dorman crafted an image that visually captures the destructive essence of the spell. While cards of this nature have seen varying degrees of competitive play throughout the game's history depending on the prevalence of white-based strategies in the meta, it remains a recognizable example of classic color-hate design from the era of core sets.
