Flashfires

Flashfires was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering, the world's first collectible card game. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game emerged from a desire to combine the depth of hobbyist gaming with the tactile, social experience of trading card culture. Beta was the second print run of the game, designed to address the immediate, overwhelming demand that exhausted the initial Alpha release, and it remains one of the most significant milestones in the history of trading card games.

The card's design features the artwork of Anson Maddocks, who was one of the original illustrators tasked with establishing the game's dark, fantasy-inspired aesthetic. Maddocks utilized a distinct, moody style that characterized early sets, aiming to capture the volatile nature of fire-based sorcery within the game's mechanics. While Flashfires occupies a niche tactical role in deck construction, it is highly valued by collectors today as a representative artifact of the game's foundational period and the unique visual identity of its early illustrators.
