Flayer Husk

Flayer Husk was originally released in the 2011 set Mirrodin Besieged, designed as part of the Living Weapon mechanic. This mechanic reflects the Phyrexian influence over the plane of Mirrodin, where equipment cards were introduced that entered the battlefield with a creature token already attached to them. The card was later reprinted in the 2016 Planechase Anthology, a collection that gathered various cards and decks from the game's history of planar travel, allowing players to revisit specific thematic environments.

The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who captured the grotesque, biomechanical aesthetic central to the Phyrexian faction. His design emphasizes the parasitic nature of the equipment, which literally grafts itself onto a host. Upon its release, it was noted for its utility in limited formats and its ability to provide early-game board presence, serving as a functional example of how the design team integrated flavor and game mechanics to tell the story of a world being slowly corrupted by alien invaders.
