Provenance

Where it came from

Flight was originally released as part of the Alpha set in 1993, later appearing in the Fourth Edition in 1995. As one of the foundational cards in Magic: The Gathering, it was designed to establish the core mechanics of the blue mana color identity, which centers on evasion and manipulation. By granting a creature the ability to fly, it allowed players to bypass ground-based blockers, a fundamental tactical advantage in the game’s early design.

The artwork for the Fourth Edition printing features an illustration by Dameon Willich. Willich’s contribution to the early sets often leaned into a classic fantasy aesthetic, capturing the quintessential imagery of flight. When Fourth Edition was released, it served as a transition for the game, as it was the first base set to feature modern card borders and updated art sourcing, helping to standardize the visual language of the growing game for a wider audience.
