Flooded Grove was originally introduced in the Shadowmoor expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2008, designed as part of a cycle of filter lands. These lands were crafted to provide players with flexible mana fixing, allowing them to convert generic mana into specific color combinations, which was a vital utility for decks featuring multiple colors. The New Capenna Commander printing, illustrated by Dave Kendall, features updated artwork that reflects the thematic aesthetic of the set, which draws heavy inspiration from 1920s Art Deco and noir crime cinema.

Dave Kendall, a long-time contributor to the game, utilized his signature atmospheric style to reimagine the land within the context of the bustling, urban metropolis of New Capenna. His design focuses on the moody, architectural elements of the setting, contrasting the natural, watery origins of the card with the rigid, gilded structures of the city. Upon its re-release in the Commander deck series, the card was well-received by players for its practical utility in high-lander formats and its cohesive integration into the artistic narrative of the New Capenna expansion.
