Where it came from
Misfortune Teller was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set in April 2022. This expansion was designed to evoke a 1920s Art Deco-inspired urban landscape controlled by five rival demon-led crime families. The card appears in the 'Obscura Operation' deck, which centers on the Obscura family—a faction of spies, mages, and assassins who utilize surveillance and manipulation to maintain their grip on the city's power structures.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Zezhou Chen, who leaned into the dark, noir-inflected aesthetic of New Capenna. The illustration depicts a robed figure amidst a swirl of magical influence, embodying the set's themes of secrecy and uncertainty. Within the game, the card is recognized for its ability to manipulate the library and tax opponents, reflecting the Obscura family’s emphasis on tactical advantage and psychological control.
