Provenance

Where it came from

Fodder Cannon was originally released in the 2000 Magic: The Gathering set Mercadian Masques. The card emerged during a period of the game’s history centered on the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its mercantile culture and unconventional technology. Mechanically, the card was designed to capitalize on the set’s focus on sacrifice-based strategies, allowing players to deal damage to creatures or players by sacrificing artifacts.

The illustration was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose distinct, painterly style helped define the visual identity of late-90s Magic cards. While Fodder Cannon was not a dominant force in competitive tournament play upon its release, it became a beloved utility piece in casual settings and kitchen-table Magic. The card was later included in 'The List', a curated selection of reprints integrated into modern Set Boosters, introducing the vintage design to a new generation of players.
