Where it came from
Recruiter of the Guard was originally released in the 2016 expansion Conspiracy: Take the Crown. Designed for the multiplayer draft format, the card was intended to provide white-aligned decks with a reliable tutor effect, allowing players to search their libraries for small-stature creatures to bolster their battlefield presence. Its mechanics reflect the set's political and strategic themes, where tactical recruitment is essential for navigating the complex social dynamics of the game.
The artwork, illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, captures a grounded, militaristic aesthetic that fits the high-fantasy tone of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Villeneuve’s work is frequently praised for its detailed portraiture and atmospheric lighting, and this piece is no exception, depicting the recruiter with a stoic and professional demeanor. The inclusion of the card in The List—a curated collection of reprints appearing in Set Boosters—ensured that this utility-focused creature remained accessible to players years after its initial printing.
