Forbidden Orchard

Forbidden Orchard was originally introduced in the Champions of Kamigawa expansion in 2004, designed as a utility land that provides mana of any color at the cost of granting the opponent a 1/1 Spirit creature token. Its inclusion in the 2015 Zendikar Expeditions set marked a significant aesthetic departure, featuring a premium, full-art foil treatment exclusive to this high-rarity masterpiece series. The set was created to celebrate the return to the Zendikar plane, reimagining iconic lands with unique visual framing that emphasized the wild, floating landscapes of the setting.

The art for this specific printing was rendered by Noah Bradley, who sought to capture the ethereal and slightly hazardous nature of a garden that yields power for a price. By focusing on sweeping, atmospheric vistas characteristic of the Zendikar style, the design team aimed to elevate the card from a standard functional piece to a collector’s object. Upon its release, the Zendikar Expeditions series was received with high enthusiasm by the player community for its departure from traditional card borders and its role as a pursuit-driven subset within standard booster releases.
