Provenance

Where it came from

Forcefield was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the inaugural printing of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the card was designed to introduce tactical defensive layers to the game's early mechanics, allowing players to pay mana to reduce incoming damage from creatures.

The artwork for the card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a foundational artist for the early game whose distinct, flowing style became iconic during the first years of Magic. The card was received as a versatile defensive tool in early deck archetypes, valued for its ability to stabilize a player's position against aggressive strategies during the game's experimental formative period.
