Lifelace

Lifelace was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural set of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to introduce a fantasy-themed strategy game that utilized collectible mechanics to create unique, varied player experiences. As a white-bordered enchantment in the earliest printing of the game, it reflects the experimental nature of Alpha’s early design philosophy, which included a wide array of situational spells intended to challenge players to build decks around niche interactions.

The art for Lifelace was created by Sandra Everingham, who contributed several illustrations to the early sets of the game. Her work in this era was characterized by a distinct, painterly aesthetic that helped define the visual identity of the game’s first year. While the card is often cited by collectors as a curiosity due to its specific color-changing mechanics, it remains a historical artifact representing the foundational period of modern trading card games, providing insight into the game's initial mechanical scope before later expansions established more rigid competitive archetypes.
