Where it came from
Foreboding Ruins was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Doctor Who' Commander set in 2023. As a land card, it was designed to represent the atmospheric and often desolate locations frequently visited by the Doctor throughout the series' sixty-year history. The design team sought to evoke the aesthetic of iconic science fiction backdrops, balancing the functional requirements of gameplay with the narrative tone of the long-running television show.
The card features artwork that captures the eerie, melancholic essence of abandoned alien environments. It was developed as part of a collaborative partnership between Wizards of the Coast and the BBC, ensuring that the visual language remained consistent with the show's lore. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the Commander format, appreciated by fans for its ability to integrate the thematic elements of the Doctor's travels into the mechanics of the game.
