Where it came from
Foreboding Ruins was released as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2016. This specific card, bearing the collector number 272s, serves as a promotional version of the rare land card, which was designed to help players fix their mana in a deck featuring black and red color identities. The card reflects the gothic horror theme of the Innistrad plane, illustrating a desolate, crumbling landscape that captures the set's signature aesthetic of decay and supernatural dread.
The artwork for this version was provided by Christine Choi, who sought to emphasize the oppressive, misty atmosphere central to the setting. By featuring extended art typical of the Shadows over Innistrad promo cycle, the design creates a more immersive visual experience for collectors. The card was distributed through various organized play channels, such as Prerelease events, and was well-received by players for its balance of thematic flavor and practical utility in the competitive environment.
