Where it came from
Forerunner of the Legion was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a creature designed to support the vampire tribal theme introduced in the Ixalan block, it functions as a tutor, allowing players to search their library for a vampire card and place it on top of their deck. This mechanic reflects the flavor of the Legion of Dusk, a conquistador-inspired faction of vampires seeking to reclaim their heritage in the world of Ixalan.
The card features artwork by artist Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's high-fantasy, Mesoamerican-inflected aesthetic to depict a resolute sentinel. The design focus was to provide mid-game consistency for aggressive white-black vampire decks, rewarding players for synergy rather than raw power. Upon its release, it was well-received by limited-format players for its ability to smooth out draws and ensure that key threats reached the battlefield reliably.
