Where it came from
Forsaken Monument was introduced in the 2020 expansion Zendikar Rising, designed to reflect the desolate, mana-starved essence of the Eldrazi entities that once ravaged the plane. The card serves as an artifact ramp piece specifically tailored for colorless decks, drawing thematic inspiration from the remnants of the titans' influence on the landscape of Zendikar. It was crafted to provide strategic utility for players focused on colorless permanents, functioning as both an engine for resource acceleration and a powerful anthem effect.
The illustrative work on this specific promo version, numbered 244p, emphasizes the stark, monolithic architecture associated with Eldrazi brood lineages. By stripping away traditional colored mana symbols in favor of colorless energy, the designers aimed to evoke a sense of alien geometry and ancient, forgotten power. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a cornerstone for Commander players, earning a reputation for its efficiency in decks that eschew the five colors of magic in favor of artifacts and eldrazi.
