Where it came from
Fortify was released in 2006 as part of the Time Spiral expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the game's history through time-shifted mechanics and nostalgic callbacks, with Fortify serving as a white instant that showcased the split-second keyword. This mechanic, which prevents players from responding to the spell, was introduced to evoke the chaotic, reactive nature of early Magic gameplay.
The card features illustration by Kev Walker, a prolific artist in the game's history known for his gritty, high-contrast style. Walker’s depiction of a soldier reinforcing a position aligns with the card’s tactical utility, emphasizing defensive strength. Upon its release, the card was noted for its role in limited formats and its ability to act as a combat trick that could not be countered or interrupted, solidifying its place as a functional piece of the set's mechanical identity.
