Where it came from
Fortify was originally printed in the Future Sight expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2007, serving as a mechanical showcase for the set's experimental design philosophy. It represents a split card, a unique design category allowing players to choose between two distinct effects—a thematic play on the duality of conflict and support during the Time Spiral block's narrative of temporal instability.
The Modern Masters 2015 version features updated card frames and contemporary templating, designed to provide a cohesive aesthetic for the curated limited-environment set. The illustration by Christopher Rush focuses on the protective, fortification-oriented aspect of the card's effect, capturing a grounded, tactical interpretation that aligns with the established visual language of the game's high-fantasy setting.
