Where it came from
The Fractal token was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Strixhaven: School of Mages. These tokens were designed to represent the unique creature type created by the Prismari college, which emphasizes the intersection of elemental magic and artistic expression. The token serves as a physical play aid, manifesting the essence of a living spell during gameplay.
The art was commissioned to capture the surreal and shifting nature of a Fractal. Illustrators were tasked with depicting a construct formed of geometric shapes and arcane energy, reflecting the aesthetic of the Strixhaven campus where mages craft constructs from pure magical overflow. Upon its release, players noted the card's stark visual departure from traditional creature designs, praising its ability to visually ground the abstract mechanics of the Prismari playstyle.
