Fraction Jackson

Fraction Jackson was released in 2004 as part of Unhinged, the second silver-bordered parody set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by head designer Mark Rosewater, the set was intended to push the boundaries of game mechanics by introducing concepts that were impossible to implement within the standard, competitive black-bordered rule set. The set embraced a whimsical, comedic tone, moving away from the high-fantasy aesthetic of traditional sets to explore the meta-narrative of card design itself.

The card features an illustration by Pete Venters, a veteran artist known for his significant contributions to the game's early years. Venters leaned into the humorous nature of the character, depicting an anthropomorphic fraction that embodies the unconventional 'fractional' math mechanics introduced in the set. The card was well-received by players who appreciated the lighthearted shift in tone, as it showcased a willingness to experiment with the fundamental structure of the game's combat and arithmetic rules.
