Fraction Jackson

Fraction Jackson was released in 2004 as part of Unhinged, the second silver-bordered joke set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Mark Rosewater and his development team, the set was intended to explore the outer limits of game mechanics and humor, intentionally subverting the standard rules of the game through effects that would not be functional in traditional tournament formats. The set was released during a period when the game was looking to experiment with its own identity, providing a lighter, self-referential alternative to the serious lore-heavy expansions that dominated the primary release schedule.

The card was illustrated by long-time Magic artist Mark Poole, who provided a whimsical depiction of a character whose physical form is represented as a series of stacked fractions. Poole, known for his work on iconic cards from the game's early history, embraced the humorous directive of the set by visually literalizing the creature's name. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche curiosity, valued more by players who enjoyed the chaotic, non-competitive social experience of 'Un-set' drafts than by those focused on the game's competitive meta-game.
