Where it came from
Fractal Tender was released as part of the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Secrets of Strixhaven, a supplemental product tied to the overarching Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion. Designed for the Commander format, the card reflects the whimsical, academic aesthetic of the set's Prismari College, which emphasizes the intersection of performance art and elemental magic.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose work is characterized by a luminous, ethereal approach to magical effects. By depicting a fractal creature in an expressive, painterly style, Voss aimed to capture the fluid and geometric nature of the spell-based manifestations central to the lore of Strixhaven. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its utility in green-based ramp strategies and its distinctive visual contribution to the game's creature token ecosystem.
