Where it came from
From Under the Floorboards was released in 2016 as part of the Shadows over Innistrad expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a thematic centerpiece for the set's gothic horror setting, drawing mechanical inspiration from the trope of madness and hidden threats lurking within a home. It features a sorcery effect that allows players to create multiple zombie tokens while gaining life, embodying the parasitic and relentless nature of the creatures synonymous with the plane of Innistrad.
The artwork was illustrated by Eric Deschamps, who captured the claustrophobic and macabre essence of the card's namesake. Deschamps employed a muted, dark color palette and dynamic lighting to emphasize the emergence of the undead from beneath wooden floorboards. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats and its strong synergy with discard-oriented strategies, marking it as a quintessential representation of the set's mechanical and aesthetic identity.
