Where it came from
From Under the Floorboards was released as part of the Shadows over Innistrad set in 2016, a return to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad. The card features artwork by Lake Hurwitz, who chose to emphasize the unsettling, claustrophobic atmosphere of the set by depicting spectral figures emerging from beneath the floorboards of a decaying mansion, fitting the set's themes of madness and supernatural dread.
This particular version was distributed as a rare promotional card, often awarded as a participation or placement prize during Friday Night Magic events. The design of the card focuses on the mechanical concept of madness, a returning keyword mechanic that allows players to cast spells for a reduced cost if they are discarded, reflecting the thematic instability and creeping horror central to the Shadows over Innistrad expansion.
