Frost Raptor

The Frost Raptor was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique in design history because it was developed as the long-awaited third set for the Ice Age block, released over a decade after the original Ice Age and Alliances sets debuted. The design team sought to capture the frigid, survivalist aesthetic of the original block while introducing modern mechanics, resulting in a cohesive set that leaned heavily into snow-covered themes.

The artwork for the Frost Raptor was created by the illustrator Matt Cavotta, who served as a prominent artist for the game throughout the mid-2000s. In designing this creature, Cavotta focused on the predatory nature of the creature within a frozen landscape, utilizing a palette of icy blues and sharp, angular lines to convey the harsh environment of the set. The card was received by the player community as a flavorful, functional inclusion for aggressive snow-themed decks during the era's competitive environment.
