Where it came from
Zur the Enchanter was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to complete the Ice Age block, drawing on mechanics and themes that had remained dormant since the mid-1990s. As a legendary creature, Zur was crafted to serve as a powerful commander-style card, allowing players to search their library for low-cost enchantments and place them directly onto the battlefield, a mechanic that defined his strategic niche in both casual and competitive formats.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Greg Staples, who utilized a moody, atmospheric style consistent with the frozen, apocalyptic aesthetic of the Coldsnap setting. Staples aimed to capture the character's manipulative and authoritative presence, framing him as a cold, calculating master of arcane arts. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency and unique ability, quickly becoming a staple in various formats and establishing itself as one of the most recognizable legendary creatures from the mid-2000s era of the game.
