Where it came from
The 'Frozen in Ice' card, numbered 54 in the 1990 Marvel Super Heroes series produced by Impel, was released during a pivotal era for comic book collectibles. This set was designed to introduce a broad audience to the Marvel Universe, featuring character profiles, iconic storylines, and illustrations by various celebrated comic artists. The cards were distributed in wax packs and aimed to provide a comprehensive retrospective of Marvel's history, bridging the gap between traditional comic readership and the burgeoning trading card market of the early 1990s.
The design of the 1990 Impel set focused on a clean, accessible layout that prioritized vibrant comic book art and biographical data, which helped establish a standard for future Marvel trading card releases. Card 54 specifically depicts the classic narrative beat of Captain America encased in ice, a cornerstone of the character's origin story. While the set was mass-produced and remains widely available, it is credited with helping to professionalize the hobby of collecting superhero cards, receiving widespread appreciation for its role in standardizing the quality of card stock and historical documentation for comic fans.
