Frostwind Invoker

Frostwind Invoker was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on a cataclysmic storyline involving the awakening of the titular Eldrazi, ancient cosmic entities threatening the plane of Zendikar. As a common card within the set, the Invoker was designed to bolster the blue color's ability to manipulate the game state, specifically through its activated ability which offers a way to tap opposing creatures during a format where managing board presence was critical.

The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of the game. Cavotta employed a cool, atmospheric color palette to emphasize the freezing nature of the creature’s magic. The design was received as a functional, utility-focused piece, characteristic of the 'Invoker' cycle found in the set, which provided players with repeatable mana-sink abilities that scaled in utility as the game progressed into the later turns.
