Where it came from
Frozen Shade was released in 1994 as part of the Summer Magic set, also known as the Edgar set. This unique, limited printing of Magic: The Gathering cards was produced by Wizards of the Coast for distribution primarily in the international market, intended to address print quality issues observed in the Revised Edition. The set is notable for its slightly brighter, more vibrant card stock and distinct color saturation compared to standard releases of the era.
The card features artwork depicting a spectral, icy entity, consistent with the thematic focus on dark and atmospheric imagery common in the game's early expansions. While the set was initially viewed as an oddity due to its limited and localized release, it has since gained recognition among collectors as a significant piece of Magic history. The design reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the mid-1990s trading card industry, emphasizing moody, illustrative fantasy art that defined the early visual identity of the game.
