Volcanic Island is one of the ten original dual lands from the 1993 Alpha release of Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield to provide players with flexible mana sources. The card is a centerpiece of the game's mechanics, allowing for the generation of either red or blue mana without penalty. This specific printing originates from the rare 1994 'Summer Magic' set, an accidental release meant to be a corrected follow-up to the Revised Edition that was largely recalled due to printing errors and inconsistencies.

The artwork for this version was provided by Brian Snoddes, who captured the elemental duality of the island with a stark, evocative landscape. Because the Summer Magic print run was almost entirely destroyed before reaching the public, the remaining cards are among the most elusive items in trading card history.
