Provenance

Where it came from

Fumarole was released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to introduce new mechanics while thematicizing the game's setting around a harsh, glacial environment. Fumarole served as a land card, providing utility within the game's resource system and reflecting the volcanic activity often found in geothermal regions, fitting the atmospheric world-building of the expansion.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Quinton Hoover, a prolific contributor to early Magic: The Gathering sets known for his distinctive, flowing style. Hoover’s artwork sought to capture the interplay between fire and ice, visualizing the geological vent for which the card is named. Upon release, the set was noted for its departure from the aesthetics of the core game, and while the card is now considered a piece of Magic history, it remains a classic example of the early, experimental artistic direction of the franchise.
