Provenance

Where it came from

Fumble was originally released as a rare card in the 1999 Urza's Legacy expansion for Magic: The Gathering. It was designed during a period of high-complexity card development, intended to provide blue decks with a tactical tool to bounce an attacking creature back to its owner's hand while simultaneously gaining a marginal tempo advantage by untapping two lands.

The artwork for the card was commissioned from Gabor Szikszai, a Hungarian illustrator known for his dramatic, high-contrast style. Szikszai opted for a kinetic composition that captures the chaotic, split-second decision-making implied by the card's name. When the card was later included in 'The List'—a recurring, curated pool of cards from Magic's history inserted into modern booster packs—it served as a nod to the game's deep history and the evolution of its instant-speed interaction mechanics.
