Furnace Brood

Furnace Brood was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus set, the third and final installment of the Rath Cycle for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to introduce complex mechanics, such as the 'buyback' keyword, which allowed players to return spells to their hand for repeated use. The card represents the aggressive, industrial aesthetic of the Phyrexians, a recurring antagonistic faction known for blending biological horror with mechanical augmentation.

The artwork was provided by Jeff Miracola, a prolific fantasy illustrator who contributed numerous pieces to the game during the late 1990s. Miracola’s design focuses on the creature’s elemental nature, emphasizing the intense heat and volatile energy inherent to the inhabitants of the plane of Rath. As a common rarity card, Furnace Brood was primarily created to fill out the mechanical ecosystem of the Limited environment, serving as an accessible creature that highlights the set’s focus on red mana-based aggression.
