Keeper of the Light

Keeper of the Light was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Wizards of the Coast, this set was the third and final installment of the Rath Cycle, a narrative arc that deeply integrated storytelling into the mechanics and flavor of the game. The card was designed to function as a defensive creature, reflecting the set's focus on strategic combat and the growing complexity of the game's creature-based interactions during the late nineties.

The artwork for the card was provided by illustrator Greg Staples. Known for his atmospheric and moody style, Staples captured a ethereal, protective figure that aligns with the card's function of damage prevention. At the time of its release, the card was received as a niche utility option, valued by players for its ability to mitigate fire-based strategies, even if it did not become a defining competitive staple.
