Where it came from
Furygale Flocking was released in 2021 as part of the Commander-specific expansion for Magic: The Gathering titled Strixhaven: School of Mages. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, this card fits into the Prismari Performance deck, which represents the college of elemental arts at Strixhaven University. The set was created to lean into the thematic identity of each college, using high-impact sorceries and instants to mirror the creative, explosive nature of the Prismari mages.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the set’s distinct aesthetic to convey a sense of chaotic, swirling movement. The design intent was to capture the flavor of a sudden, elemental surge, effectively translating the lore of Strixhaven—a plane defined by academic competition and magical prowess—into a functional gameplay mechanic. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful addition for players focusing on spell-heavy strategies, noted for its thematic alignment with the college's focus on kinetic energy.
