Where it came from
Furygale Flocking was released in 2021 as part of the Prismari Performance Commander deck, which accompanied the Magic: The Gathering set Strixhaven: School of Mages. Designed to fit the thematic identity of the Prismari college, the card reflects the institution's focus on expressive magic, elemental power, and the intersection of art and spellcasting. Within the game's mechanics, the card serves as a thematic utility piece, utilizing the 'flocking' flavor to represent the chaotic, creative energy associated with Prismari students.
The card's illustration, crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, emphasizes the fluid, vibrant aesthetic characteristic of the Prismari aesthetic. Setiawan sought to capture the dynamic motion of elemental creatures coalescing into a singular, forceful event. Upon its release, the card was viewed by players as a niche inclusion specifically tailored for decks utilizing red and blue mana, often cited for its effectiveness in swarm-based strategies that benefit from temporary aggressive boosts.
