Gahiji, Honored One

Gahiji, Honored One was released in 2013 as part of the Commander 2013 product line, a series of preconstructed decks designed specifically for the multiplayer Commander format. The character was created to serve as a thematic centerpiece for the 'Nature of the Beast' deck, which focused on the Naya color identity of red, green, and white. The design sought to incentivize a 'group hug' style of play, encouraging opponents to attack players other than the controller by providing a combat bonus to creatures attacking anyone but the user.

The card’s art was illustrated by artist Matt Cavotta, a long-time contributor to the game who infused the piece with a regal, imposing aesthetic befitting the creature's title. His design emphasizes the character's role as a protector and leader of the wild, utilizing warm, earthy tones to align with its Naya identity. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its ability to politically manipulate combat phases and alter the flow of multiplayer games without directly engaging in aggression.
