Where it came from
Garruk, Cursed Huntsman was originally released in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set Throne of Eldraine. The card represents a pivotal moment in the game's ongoing narrative, depicting the iconic planeswalker Garruk Wildspeaker freed from the Chain Veil’s curse that had plagued him for years. This specific iteration, collector number 191s, serves as the stylized showcase promo variant for the set, intended to highlight the character's darker, more complex transformation within the folklore-inspired aesthetic of Eldraine.
The artwork for this showcase version was created by Johannes Voss, who utilized a distinct, stark illustrative style to emphasize the character’s brooding nature. By employing a limited color palette and dramatic framing, Voss sought to evoke the dark fairy-tale themes central to the plane of Eldraine. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players and collectors alike for its striking visual departure from standard card frames, quickly becoming a sought-after piece for those tracking the lore of the Multiverse.
