Gaseous Form was originally introduced in the Legends expansion in 1994, reflecting the set's focus on top-down design and unconventional mechanical interactions. As a blue enchantment that transforms a creature into an intangible state, it was created to simulate ethereal evasion and damage mitigation. By the time of the Classic Sixth Edition release in 1999, the card had become a staple of casual play and limited environments, serving as a signature example of how Magic: The Gathering used mechanics to translate flavor into tactical utility.

The artwork for the Sixth Edition printing features the work of illustrator Dameon Willich, who contributed to the game during its formative years. The design intended to visually manifest the shift from physical substance to vapor, utilizing muted colors and blurred outlines to convey the subject's loss of corporeal form.
