Where it came from
The Gavel of the Righteous was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set. This expansion drew inspiration from 1920s noir aesthetics and organized crime tropes, blending them with the high-fantasy setting of a city built by angels and governed by five competing demon-led families. The item was designed to function as an Equipment card that rewards aggressive, creature-focused strategies, fitting the set's thematic emphasis on power and influence.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Caio Monteiro, who employed a bold, dramatic style to capture the essence of New Capenna’s art deco influence. By depicting the artifact as an ornate, heavy instrument of law, the design leans into the flavor of the set's judicial and enforcement themes. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, niche utility piece that saw moderate play in decks utilizing keyword-focused synergies.
