Where it came from
Gearshift Ace was released in 2016 as part of the Kaladesh expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in a plane inspired by an optimistic, magitech-fueled industrial revolution, the card reflects the set's focus on innovative contraptions and vehicular combat. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the 'Vehicles' subtheme, utilizing the first strike keyword to provide an aggressive edge to pilot creatures during combat sequences.
The card features illustration by artist Raoul Vitale, who rendered the pilot in a dynamic, high-energy style consistent with the aesthetic of the Kaladesh inventors. The design was received as a functional 'uncommon' utility creature, highly valued in the Limited format for its ability to grant First Strike to vehicles. It remains a notable example of the set’s focus on fast-paced, artifact-centric gameplay.
