Where it came from
Authority of the Consuls was released in 2016 as part of the Kaladesh expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a white enchantment meant to provide players with a defensive tool against aggressive, creature-heavy strategies by gaining life whenever a creature enters the battlefield under an opponent's control and forcing those creatures to enter tapped.
The art was illustrated by Clint Cearley, who depicted the oppressive atmosphere of the Consulate, the ruling body of the plane of Kaladesh. His design focuses on the authoritative, bureaucratic nature of the regime, using clean lines and a refined color palette to contrast with the chaotic, inventive spirit of the game's protagonists. The card was well-received by players for its efficiency in competitive formats, particularly as a sideboard option against fast-paced decks.
