Get a Life

Released in 1998 as part of the Unglued set, Get a Life was one of the earliest entries into Magic: The Gathering’s satirical, non-tournament-legal expansions. Created during a period of experimentation at Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed by a team led by Mark Rosewater to challenge the standard game conventions through humor, parody, and mechanics that broke traditional rules. The card itself serves as a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the intensity of the hobbyist community at the time.

The artwork, illustrated by Quinton Hoover, reflects the lighthearted nature of the Unglued set, utilizing a whimsical style that contrasts with the serious fantasy aesthetic of standard Magic sets. The card’s design, which requires players to perform a specific physical or social task to gain life, was met with amusement from the player base and remains a hallmark of the set’s focus on the social experience of gameplay rather than pure competitive strategy.
