Giant Octopus

The Giant Octopus card was first introduced to the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem in the 1994 expansion Legends, later featuring in the Seventh Edition core set in 2001. As a common blue creature, it was designed to serve as a fundamental mechanical component for deck-building, reflecting the game's early fascination with oceanic folklore and sea-faring threats. The artwork for the Seventh Edition release was provided by artist Greg Staples, who moved away from the more surreal, abstract illustrations of the early 90s toward a more polished, cinematic aesthetic common in that era of the game.

During the transition to the Seventh Edition, Wizards of the Coast sought to modernize the visual identity of the brand, standardizing card frames and commissioning new illustrations for many legacy cards. Staples' interpretation of the Giant Octopus aimed to capture the sheer scale and menace of the creature lurking beneath the surface. While not a centerpiece card for competitive play, the design is frequently appreciated by collectors for its role in establishing the visual consistency of the core sets during the turn of the millennium.
