Where it came from
Hibernation first appeared in the Visions expansion in 1997, designed as a green enchantment that punished players for fielding armies of artifact creatures. Its inclusion in the Seventh Edition core set in 2001 marked its transition into the modern era of the game, maintaining the core mechanical identity of the card while updating the visual aesthetic to match the standardized, cleaner frame introduced in that edition.
The artwork for the Seventh Edition printing was provided by artist Mike Dringenberg. His illustration depicts a somber, mystical scene focused on the theme of deep rest and magical stasis, diverging from the more direct, aggressive depictions seen in earlier sets. It was received as a functional, niche utility card within the Seventh Edition environment, valued primarily for its ability to clear the board of specific threats in strategic matchups.
